Our History

A near Century long Legacy.

In 1932, at the age of 25, José Moreira acquired a small grocery store in Matosinhos, which quickly gained recognition for the exceptional quality of its coffee, which at the time was sourced from Angola. Popularly known as the "Casa do Café de Angola," its name was later shortened to "Casa Angola."

Over the years, his wife, Elvira Oliveira, dedicated herself to the art of coffee, creating and refining more than 80 blends and mixtures, ranging from the most popular mixtures made with chicory and barley to the most sophisticated and selective coffee blends. Her passion led her to explore and master the coffee flavors from the most prestigious origins: São Tomé, Brazil, Angola, Timor-Leste, Colombia, and Egypt, thus building a legacy that endures to this day.

The "Lote Particular":

A Flavor with History

Of the many blends created by Elvira Oliveira, the Lote Particular did not just distinguish itself in Matosinhos. In truth, its fame travelled far beyond its borders when our countrymen abroad found an authentic taste of Portuguese coffee in it.

It was a strong coffee that provided comfort and energy for the fishing community of Matosinhos during the harsh cold of a night's work, and it also became a taste of home for those living far away. It was precisely orders from Spain, France, Germany and Luxembourg that inspired the name 'Lote Particular', as it was a coffee so special that it was ordered in small, personal quantities to ease feelings of homesickness.

Today, 60 years later, we offer you the same expertise and flavour that united our community. It is a unique blend of African Robusta and South American Arabica beans, resulting in an intense, full-bodied coffee with an unmistakable flavour that has united generations of Portuguese people.

We invite you to visit our store in the heart of Matosinhos' Municipal Market. It is more than just a store; it's an iconic space that celebrates Portugal's coffee heritage. Located in front of the taxi stand, our store is housed in one of the city's historical buildings.

Inside, you'll be welcomed by the aroma of freshly ground coffee. Our historical coffee mills have been precisely grinding coffee beans for decades, maintaining the mastery and flavour that our coffee has always been known for.

Come and experience it for yourself, from the unmistakable aroma to the sound of coffee being ground. We look forward to guiding you on a voyage of flavour and tradition, where each cup tells a tale.
